Meaning and History of Orange Calcite
Existing since antiquity, Calcite stone is a mineral species which has given rise to numerous researches, starting in the 17th century. However, it was not sought after as an economic mineral, but rather for its optical specificities. The starting point was the discovery of the birefringence of Icelandic spar (a transparent variety of calcite crystals), by the Danish Rasmus Bartholin 3, in 1669.
This discovery was made following the excitement aroused by the discovery of a deposit of silver-white calcite crystals, in mines in Iceland, in Helgustadir, in the Eskifjödhur region. Very pure, the calcite crystals from these mines were attractive both for their shapes and their colors, which earned them the name “ silver stones ”.
Rasmus Bartholin's studies contribute to revealing the birefringence of these crystals, namely their particularities in dividing a light ray in two when light passes through them. This discovery made it possible to make great progress in the optical field.
Indeed, we observed, for example, that when looking at letters through a rhombohedron extracted from Icelandic spar, these letters were seen as duplicates, on the paper. The discovery of birefringence thus gave rise to numerous studies on samples of this crystal. The latter therefore took on various names during these multiple observations. Names like limestone spar, focobonite, aphrite, etc., were thus used.
