If you've ever taken a yoga or meditation class, completed an energy healing session like reiki, or simply watched videos online on these topics, you've probably heard about chakras and the role they play in the flow of energy in your body.
You may also have learned that it is important to keep your chakras open , or unblocked .
But what exactly are chakras and how do they affect your physical and emotional well-being ?
In this page we will take a closer look at the main chakras. We will also explain the impact these energy centers can have on your body and mind, as well as how to keep them "open" to promote physical, mental and emotional well-being.
What are chakras?
In Sanskrit, the word "chakra" means "disc" or "wheel" and refers to the energy centers of your body. These wheels or disks of rotating energy each correspond to certain nerve bundles and major organs.
To function at their best, your chakras must remain open, or balanced. If they are blocked, you may experience physical or emotional symptoms related to a particular chakra.
There are seven main chakras along your spine. They start at the root, or base, of your spine and extend to the top of your head. That said, some people believe that there are at least 114 different chakras in the body.
The most commonly mentioned chakras are the main seven which we will explore in more detail below.
