Science and origin of Larvikite

Larvikite is a black igneous rock composed entirely of feldspar (with small changes in chemical composition) that crystallizes in large masses. Within the feldspar itself, small silvery and bluish crystals are found which give Larvikite its notoriety and fame. This eye-catching "flash" is commonly called the "Schiller effect" and is believed to be due to ternary feldspar (a fancy name for feldspar rich in potassium, sodium and calcium). Larvikite is believed to have formed over 298 million years ago, at an estimated depth of 18 miles below the Earth's surface (an astonishing feat considering that large deposits of this mineral are breaking into mainland Norway). The name of this mineral comes from the town where it was originally discovered, Larvik, Norway. Since then, a few deposits have been discovered around the world, with the other major source coming from Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada.

Larvikite is the national rock of Norway and has been designated a GHSR (Global Heritage Stone Resource) by the International Union of Geological Sciences. This designation is due to the extensive use of this mineral in the commercial world. Large corporate buildings have notoriously used Larvikite tiles as facades, with many kitchen countertops coming from a large slab of this mineral. The shimmering effect only happens when cut correctly and at the right angle. This results in a global need for artisans and cutters who specialize in cutting this unique and difficult material.

Meaning and energy

Larvikite is a stone of inner transformation that helps one better adapt to change, as well as accept and understand the benefits that can result from it.
