Varieties of Blue Sapphire

When we simply talk about “Sapphire”, we always mean blue Sapphires. But there are also Sapphires of other colors, which are then called “fancy sapphire” or “colored sapphire”. Traces of elements such as chromium, iron and titanium cause the appearance of blue , green, orange, red, purple and yellow tones, and combinations of these colors. There are also color changing sapphires.

Another variety of Sapphire is the Star Sapphire . Asterism is caused by the reflection of light from parallel acicular inclusions. Six-pointed stars are the standard for sapphires, but sometimes there can be twelve-pointed stars.

The Padparadsha Sapphire , which you can see in a photo a little higher on the page, is the only Sapphire with its own variety denomination. Other Sapphires are generally made up of the name of their color (Blue Sapphire, Orange Sapphire, Yellow Sapphire, Pink Sapphire, Ceylon Sapphire, Sapphire tinted with purple...).

The rarity of the gems of this Padparadscha Sapphire as well as its sublime pink and orange colors make it a stone very popular with stone collectors but also with the greatest jewelers.

Be careful not to confuse what we call "Water Sapphire" with a real Sapphire. In fact, “Water Sapphire” is in fact Cordierite, better known under the name Iolite. The confusion between its two stones comes from its color which at first glance resembles a Sapphire.

Meaning and history of the Blue Sapphire

The word sapphire from the Greek “sappheiros” means “blue”. The Greeks and Romans used sapphires from Sri Lanka in the 5th century BCE. The Egyptians revered and considered the Sapphire stone as sacred and indicative of justice and truth and the Persians believed that the blue of the sky resulted from its reflections. For the Catholic Church, the Sapphire stone is a symbol of purity, and cardinals wore it as a ring on their right hand.

In ancient times

The Sapphire stone is mentioned in the Old Testament . The Tablets of the Law would have been made of Sapphire, but not as a material, rather on a spiritual level because it would represent Moses' vision of God. We better understand the celestial and divine symbolism of the stone. The color blue is always associated with celestial and divine power among the Greeks and Romans. The Sapphire stone of Antiquity does not always correspond to the one we know, because the descriptions of the Greeks designated blue stones with golden dots corresponding rather to Lapis Lazuli. Different peoples associated the intensity of the color with a supposed sex of the stone: a dark blue Sapphire would be male and a paler female.

In the Middle Ages

In the 4th century, the Franks and Visigoths brought with them a complex goldsmithing technique, cloisonné, which consists of creating fine spaces with copper or gold to accommodate stones. The Catholic Church associates the stone with divine purity and the Virgin Mary. According to legend, the King of England Edward the Confessor offered his ring to a beggar, who became Saint John the Evangelist. Stories report that a giant sapphire of incredible beauty is found in the former home of Mary, converted into a rich basilica over the centuries. At the Louvre is exhibited a religious work decorated with sapphires and dating from the 15th century , bearing the image of Joan of Navarre. Gems at the time adorned jewelry (sapphire pendant, bracelet, necklace, etc.) and objects such as hanaps, large glasses in the shape of vases.

Modern times

The Grand Sapphire of Louis XIV is an intense blue piece of 135 carats , coming from Ceylon and probably offered. Its shape has long suggested that it was a rough stone, but it was certainly recut. Legend has it that it was discovered by a seller of wooden spoons in Bengal, and then belonged to an Italian prince named Ruspoli. In reality, there are two distinct stones. The Black Star of Queensland or black star sapphire was found by a young boy in Australia. The stone is ignored until it is sold to a jeweler who reveals its beauty by cutting it. With its 733 carats, it is estimated today at 100 million dollars.
