The name of this stone comes from the Latin “ saeptum ” which means “ enclosure, partition ”, this undoubtedly in reference to the patterns which distinguish it. This name would have been given by English mineralogists, according to the “Dictionary of Natural Sciences” written by several professors at the Jardin du Roi and the main Schools of Paris. In this 19th century work, it is explained that the old name of (or the) Septaria is ludus helmondii or helmontite (names which are no longer used).
