    Meaning and History of Septaria

The Septaria is a little-known stone but nevertheless quite common . It should be noted that Septaria is not recognized by the IMA (International Mineralogical Association).

The name of this stone comes from the Latin “ saeptum ” which means “ enclosure, partition ”, this undoubtedly in reference to the patterns which distinguish it. This name would have been given by English mineralogists, according to the “Dictionary of Natural Sciences” written by several professors at the Jardin du Roi and the main Schools of Paris. In this 19th century work, it is explained that the old name of (or the) Septaria is ludus helmondii or helmontite (names which are no longer used).

Depending on the region from which they come, concretions differ in their composition and colors. Septaria is composed mainly of calcite , aragonite, chalcedony, bentonite and barite. It may also contain limestone or dolomite.

Certain concretions can contain an extremely rare mineral, whewellite . It is an organic mineral like amber, formed by the oxidation of physiological matter. Opaque to translucent, Septaria ranges from black to gray, white to beige, brown to green, yellow, orange and red.

Septaria is sometimes also called dragon stone .
