The name of this stone comes from the surname of the Japanese geologist Ken-Ichi Sugi (1901-1948) who discovered it on an island in the southwest of Japan , near Kyoto and made its first description in 1944.The IMA ( International Mineralogical Association) has validated this designation.
Sugilite, sometimes also called luvulite, is a relatively rare variety of pink to purple cyclosilicate, considered a fine stone, used in jewelry and art objects .
It is also extracted from stratified manganese deposits in the Wessels Mine in the Cape Province of South Africa. Other deposits have been reported in Italy (Liguria and Tuscany), Australia (New South Wales, and India (Madhya Pradesh).
