In the 1960s , violent storms hit the Merelani hills, close to Kilimanjaro. The latter lit fires which pushed the Massai tribe to flee for shelter.

When they returned, they discovered blue pebbles on the ground . Originally gray-brown, they had been transformed by heat into blue gems. For the Masai , this was a divine sign, this color having a sacred character .

Perplexed as to the nature of this very particular mineral , they commissioned a local explorer to find out about this crystal. Unable to identify it, he sent them to a gemologist in northern Tanzania. It was the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) mineralogy research center which determined that it was a major discovery. This is a previously unknown category of zoisite .

However, it was then only known as a brown mineral. It is a temperature of 600 degrees that the stone of this blue color turns to the unique purple red.

It was only a few years later that the owner of the famous jewelry store Tiffany & Co named them Tanzanites. Named in homage to their country of origin.
