The 12 houses of the horoscope and what they represent

Like a clock, the zodiac is divided into 12 segments, or houses, each ruled by a different sign. The zodiac begins with the first house and moves counterclockwise.

Each house is associated with a set of characteristics, starting with the self and then extending to society and beyond. At the time of your birth, the planets were all in specific signs and houses. When an astrologer interprets your chart, she mixes the meaning of each planet, the house it is in, and the sign it is in, to determine what obstacles or gifts you will face in your life .

When planets visit a house, they illuminate that part of your chart and energize the characteristics of that house. Astrologers use houses to predict which parts of your life will be highlighted, and where you can take the best possible action. To learn more about a house, read the sign associated with it.

The first six houses are known as the "personal houses", while the last six are known as the "interpersonal houses".
