Meaning of the Third Eye Chakra

Blog Posts Third Eye Chakra Meaning

The third eye chakra is the sixth chakra in the body, and it is your primary portal to moving beyond duality and taking full control of your reality.

The 6th chakra is the center of your intuition, imagination, self-awareness and lucidity.

The element associated with the third eye chakra is light, and the color of the sixth chakra is indigo, or deep blue.

Ajna chakra is also the seat of the sixth sense, as it allows you to see the world through the lens of your intuition, and it helps you clarify your inner vision.

The Ajna chakra symbol is represented by an indigo blue lotus, and it consists of the following elements:

  • 2 petals representing Ida and Pingala with 2 Sanskrit syllables.
  • A downward-facing triangle.
  • Mantra OM यं in the center.

Let's take a look at each of these elements individually and find out what they mean.

Third Eye Chakra Symbol: 2 Lotus Petals Meaning

The two petals of the Ajna chakra are believed to represent Ida and Pingala, the two most important subtle energy channels (called "nadis" in Sanskrit), which flow up from the root chakra to the head and join the Sushumna nadi.

Sushumna is a central nadi that connects all of your chakras along the spine and guides your kundalini energy to your crown chakra.

Sometimes the left petal of the third eye chakra symbol is adorned with a syllable HAM हं, which represents Shiva (symbol of the masculine principle), and the right petal is adorned with the syllable KSHAM क्षं, which is associated with Shakti (principle feminine).

The two petals of the Ajna chakra symbol can also be interpreted as the physical eyes, manifest and unmanifest spirit, or the pineal and pituitary glands.

Third Eye Chakra Symbol: Downward Facing Triangle

At the center of the lotus, there is a downward-facing triangle representing enlightenment and your connection to the divine with an OM ॐ syllable, known as the third eye chakra bija mantra (or seed mantra).

OM is considered the fundamental sound of the world, which includes all other sounds.

It is also a sacred spiritual symbol in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism, where it is considered the supreme sound of the Universe and a representation of the Creator.

Third Eye Chakra Symbol Deity: Ardhanarishvara

Ardhanarishvara is a hybrid form of the Hindu deities Shiva and Shakti.

The right half of the Ardhanarishvara represents the calm , energy- aware nature of Shiva.

In tantric ideology, Shiva and Shakti are metaphysically involved in each other through a tantric union, which is much more than just the physical union of a man and a woman.

The fusion of the masculine and feminine forces (Purusha and Prakriti) of the world is captured in the image of Ardhanarishvara, and it illustrates the fact that Shakti, the feminine principle of God, is inseparable from Shiva (or, according to the interpretation of some, from the masculine principle of God) and vice versa.

This energy signifies the absolute reality of the entire cosmos, the entire truth on which the universe is built. It is deep, free, grounded and conscious.

The other half of Ardhanarishvara, undoubtedly, is what Shakti represents. Its energy is more fluid in nature. His vitality and creative instinct complement the calm nature of Shiva's energy.

All life forms that you see in the world are the result of this expressive and flexible energy of Shakti.
