What is the crown chakra?
The crown chakra, also known as the "thousand-petalled lotus", is the 7th energy center from the bottom, located at the crown of your head. A healthy crown chakra vibrates the color of purple or white, with thought as the dominant element.
The Sanskrit name for the crown chakra is "Sahasrara", which means "a thousand times" and refers to the infinite petals of its lotus representing the highest spiritual attainment.
The crown chakra is associated with the pituitary gland located in your head, also known as the master gland. The pituitary gland controls and regulates the rest of the endocrine glands in your body (just as the crown chakra oversees the rest of your chakras).
What is the function of the crown chakra?
The main function of the crown chakra is to connect you to the divine force and infinite source of healing energy through spirituality, self-realization, knowledge and enlightenment. As you begin to open to the beautiful energy of the Divine, your crown chakra acts as a direct energetic channel to your Higher Self.
You can think of your highest chakra as a receiver of Source consciousness, which keeps you in touch with the Divine and your higher Self. This chakra allows you to realize that there is a deeper meaning and order in life, which governs all creation.
Crown Chakra Symbol Meaning
The crown chakra symbol is represented by the symbol of a purple lotus with 1000 petals. The circle in the center of the symbol represents the emptiness of space.
As your consciousness rises from the lower chakras up to the crown chakra, you will be able to connect and merge with this infinite space. You can also think of it as a "circle of unity" with all living things in the universe.
The crown chakra symbol sometimes has an OM ॐ syllable in the middle, also known as the bija mantra (or seed mantra). OM is considered the fundamental sound of the world, which includes all other sounds.
It is also a sacred spiritual symbol in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism, where it is considered the supreme sound of the universe and a representation of the Creator.
So why does the crown chakra lotus have 1000 petals?
The thousand petals are believed to symbolize the power of kundalini energy, which rises in the awakened crown chakra. Ultimately, this amazing feeling can be described as a flower with many petals opening at the top of your head.
Crown Chakra Color Meanings
The color associated with the crown chakra is purple, which has the highest vibrational frequency of the entire color spectrum. Purple is a color of spirituality, reflection and self-awareness.
A purple aura indicates that a person is very curious, interested and willing to seek answers to various problems in life in order to follow the right path. Purple gives an inner feeling of unity, integrity and wholeness.
White is another color that is often associated with the crown chakra. White represents purity, perfection, innocence and new beginnings. It will encourage you to stay calm, focus and keep your mind open.
So what is the best way to work with these spiritual colors?
One of the simplest and most powerful techniques for opening your crown chakra is to imagine a large amount of bright, white light around your body. When you can better visualize the white light in your aura, you can amplify the power of this technique by imagining the same light surrounding the entire Earth.
Crown chakra blockage
Your crown chakra is most likely blocked and imbalanced when you feel:
- Disconnected from spirituality
- Detached from the Divine / God / the Universe
- Unreasonable focus on material possessions
- a lack of meaning and purpose in life
- Solitude
The archetype of the person with a blocked crown chakra is known as “the egoist.” Egoists are people who believe that their ambition alone will move them forward in life. They believe that they are isolated from a larger existence and that the outcomes of their lives are controlled by their efforts alone.
The egoist is a narcissistic individual who is trapped in a state of separation and very often experiences feelings of loneliness and isolation. The egoist is deeply anchored in the material world and has a view of life that does not allow him to recognize a higher force.
Crown Chakra Awakening and Healing
Awakening to the crown chakra level of consciousness is the full realization that All is One and that all come from the same Divine origin. Letting go of your egoic identifications can be the first step on the path to awakening and healing your blocked crown chakra. Your ego has an important role: keeping you alive. However, it also gives you a false impression of yourself.
When you recognize that something outside of you is more important than your mind, you experience a feeling of separation.
One of the best ways to apply these ideas in a simple, daily practice is to follow the universal law, which states that when you are compassionate, kind, and respectful to others, you are also kind to yourself. This is the beauty and simplicity of Oneness.
How do I open my crown chakra?
One of the most important things you can do when working with your crown chakra is to embark on the path of absolute surrender to the higher power.
In Buddhism, this degree of consciousness is represented by the path of the Bodhisattva. When you decide to follow the path of the bodhisattva, your crown chakra awakens. The Bodhisattva resolves to attain Buddhahood and chooses enlightenment for the benefit of all. All previous chakras must be integrated and balanced to maintain this level of consciousness.
When you decide to embark on your own path of enlightenment and abandon the myth of separation, your mind will be elevated to the highest levels of consciousness.
So, are you ready to open to your true divine nature?
Here are some key things to consider before tackling specific methods of healing your crown chakra:
- Be open to receiving advice.
- Remember that you are part of something bigger.
- Live in the moment as much as you can.
- Stay centered in pure awareness, especially in times of chaos.
- Spiritual purification sometimes requires silence and deep reflection.
- Enlightenment is a state in which you experience oneness with all life.
- Your spirit is eternal.
With that in mind, let's take a quick break and grab a pen and a piece of paper.
I have noted some questions below (essential for activating your crown chakra).
Take the time to meditate on these and write down your answers before moving on to the rest of the article. Don't worry if you aren't able to give a clear answer to some of these at the moment. You can come back to these questions later.
What is the greatest sense of purpose, order, or consciousness that you can align with?
- What part of divinity most drives you to do your best?
- What are the highest standards and principles to which you want to aspire?
- What are the greatest attributes or values you would like to embody? What is the greatest gift you have?
- How can you use your gift to serve others?
Now let's look at some of the best methods I have personally tried to heal and awaken my crown chakra.
1. Crown chakra meditation
Meditation is the most important practice for unlocking the power of your crown chakra. It's a necessary habit to cultivate if you want to clear your mind, expand your awareness, and develop the ability to listen to your inner voice. I'm sure you are most likely familiar with the benefits of meditation, as many people talk about it a lot these days.
However, your crown chakra is in direct correlation with your brain, and any meditative practice that brings calm to your mind will be very beneficial to your crown chakra. When your mind is calm and quiet, your brainwaves shift to the alpha state and you begin to connect to the infinite source of information.
There are many different forms of meditation, such as:
- guided meditation
- mindfulness meditation
- Concentration meditation
- movement meditation (such as tai chi or yoga)
- Mantra meditation
- Transcendental meditation
Choose the one you like the most and make it a daily habit to soothe your mind and nourish it.
2. Silence exercise for the crown chakra
Whether you're a fan of meditation or not, spending time in silence (alone or with a friend) is also a great way to cultivate deeper awareness and practice being present.
Intentional silence is actually an ancient and sacred practice, also known as “Mauna.” Mauna devotees generally start by limiting their speech to the bare minimum. Thereafter, you can refrain from reading, writing and minimize contact with others.
Before you begin, be sure to remove all distractions from your environment and open yourself to the power of Mauna. It's also a great exercise to do when you're feeling overwhelmed or stuck in life. Practicing silence will allow you to open your mind to new ideas and inspiration.
3. Visualization of the crown chakra
As your crown chakra is located right at the top of your head, it is not difficult to rest your awareness on this area and visualize it. The best way to do this is to imagine a purple-colored lotus right above your head and imagine it opening and extending in all directions.
You can also imagine a ball of purple light rotating clockwise. At the same time, imagine white and golden light passing through the funnel and filling your entire body.
This simple visualization method is very effective because when you think about your crown chakra and visualize it opening, it will begin to open.

4. Crown Chakra Affirmations
Crown Chakra Affirmations can be helpful when working with your Sahasrara, as they can help you connect to your Higher Self and completely eliminate all identifications of your ego.
Try some of these powerful crown chakra affirmations. They can be used throughout the day or during your meditation to strengthen your 7th chakra:
- I am divine light.
- I am at peace.
- I am one with all that is.
- I am infinite and limitless.
- I see the divine light in everyone.
- I listen to the wisdom of the universe.
- I seek to understand and learn from my life experiences.
- I look for experiences that nourish my spirit.
- I am connected to the wisdom of the Universe.
- I raise my level of consciousness every day
- I get help whenever I ask for it.
- Everything is going exactly as it should in my life.
- Everything is happening for my greatest good.
- My thoughts and feelings have the power to manifest.
5. Yoga Poses for the Crown Chakra
Some of the most effective yoga postures for the crown chakra are postures that stimulate energy and blood flow to your head. The supported headstand is one of my favorite yoga poses for the crown chakra, and I have been practicing it for many years.
However, if you have a back or neck injury, I don't recommend it. You can replace it with the Viparita Karani pose, which is probably the second best pose for your crown chakra.
Let's take a look at the full list of the most effective yoga poses for your crown chakra:
- Headstand (Salamba Sirasana)
- Leg posture in wall pose (Viparita Karani)
- Lotus pose (Padmasana)
- Tree Pose (Vrksasana)
- Standing Prayer Back Pose (Ardha Anuvittasana)
- Rabbit Pose (Sasangasana)
6. Stones and crystals for the crown chakra
Purple, violet and white stones are considered most beneficial for healing your crown chakra as they resonate strongly with the colors of the Sahasrara.
Here are some of the gemstones that can help you enhance and balance your crown center:
Amethyst – this purple gemstone is excellent for the higher chakras. Amethyst has a high vibrational frequency and is an ideal stone for prayer, meditation and contemplation. Amethyst is a stone of divine protection and purification. It purifies your energy field of harmful energies and attachments. It generates a shield of resonant, divine light over the entire body.
Clear Quartz – this purifying stone has the power to unblock the mind and open you to higher guidance. Crystal Quartz is known to enhance consciousness and spiritual energies. When it comes to holistic healing, there is no better choice than clear quartz, which is considered a master healer crystal - it will be helpful in activating your master gland (pituitary), which governs your chakra crown.
Moonstone – this beautiful gemstone of new beginnings is helpful in balancing your crown and third eye chakras. Moonstone encourages us to be attentive to the cycles of life and to honor the stages and cycles of passage of each new period. Moonstone teaches us to let go of grievances and surrender to the natural flow of life.
You can use any of these powerful crown chakra stones and crystals by holding them, wearing them as jewelry, or simply having them around your home.
7. Crown Chakra Foods
The crown chakra is the seat of universal consciousness and divine connection, so there are no specific foods that can resonate with its frequency.
Some of the best "foods" for your crown chakra are:
- The sunlight
- pure water
- Fresh air and nature activities
- prana
- unconditional love
The crown chakra has some important lessons to learn when it comes to food and diet:
- Recognize food as a gift. You can include your own prayer (spiritual practice) before your meals.
- Release your attachment to food and purify your body through fasting.
- Understand that the quality of the food you eat is much more important than the quantity.
8. Crown Chakra Essential Oils
Essential oils are a great way to establish a better connection with the Divine. They will help you clear your mind and allow you to feel more relaxed during your crown chakra meditations.
Some of the best essential oils for healing the crown chakra include frankincense, peppermint, sandalwood, rosemary, and lotus.
What is the best way to use essential oils for blocked chakra?
One of the best ways to get the most out of your essential oil is to use an aroma diffuser or humidifier, which will also create a soothing scent in your room and help with any dry skin issues. Another good way to use crown chakra essential oils is to apply them directly to your forehead or give yourself a relaxing foot massage.
Symptoms of Crown Chakra Opening
Your crown chakra will begin to open as you begin to trust more in divine perfection. Therefore, you will be able to experience a state of flow on a daily basis. A deeper faith that everything is happening exactly as it should and that you are exactly where you need to be in life is one of the main symptoms of your crown chakra opening.
When your crown chakra opens, its appearance in your auric field begins to resemble a halo. Many paintings and drawings of spiritual beings very often depict them with a halo effect around their heads.
As you progress in your spiritual awakening, the hue of your crown chakra begins to change from purple to a bright white color. Ultimately, a healthy and balanced crown chakra will allow you to open to the knowledge of higher dimensional realities and reach your highest potential.
Keep in mind that when you say yes to the evolution of your soul, you are also saying yes to collective evolution throughout the world. The most important teaching of the crown chakra is that we are all ONE.
