One of my favorite methods for working with the chakras is through sound vibrations, music, and mantras.

Certain sound vibrations are known to have profound effects on your physical and mental health, as they are capable of directly altering your brain waves and creating a state of coherence between body and mind.

The belief that sound influences the mind and body's well-being is not new. For thousands of years, chanting and reciting mantras has been an important part of Hindu culture.

The sound and vibrations generated by reciting mantras increase theta brain frequencies, which are associated with a deep meditative state.

In this article, I'll give you an easy-to-understand guide on how to incorporate mantras into your chakra healing practice.

We're going to talk about the importance of seed mantras and discuss which sound frequencies are most beneficial for each of your chakras.

Without further ado, let's start with a simple definition of mantra:

What is a mantra?

A mantra is a monosyllabic sound that can be spoken aloud and repeated during meditation or other spiritual practice, to keep your mind focused.

Mantras come from Hindu and Buddhist tradition, and some of the oldest mantras date back to the Vedic (Hindu) scriptures of 3,000 years ago.

According to Vedic tradition, sound vibrations tap into the current of elemental energy that exists everywhere in this world but is invisible to the human eye.

One of the most famous mantras today is the sound "OM".

OM (ॐ) is considered the primordial sound, which carries the essence of the Universe.

OM is also the most important seed mantra (or in Sanskrit bija mantra), which resonates with the energy of your third eye and crown chakras.

What is the Bija Mantra?

The Sanksrit alphabet consists of 50 different letters called bijas (or seed mantras), which are believed to be sounds with great divine powers and infinite energy.

Want to know the best part?

Each of these 50 Sanskrit letters (bijas) is found on 50 petals of the first six chakra symbols (from the root chakra to the third eye chakra)!

Some people even say that Sanskrit is the most important language among all languages.

They consider it "the language of the gods" and pre-existing human beings, because it is made up of bija mantras - vibrational constituents of the entire universe.

What are the chakra sounds?

There are 7 chakras in the human body and here are the sounds (also called bija mantras in the Sanskrit language) associated with each chakra:

  • Root chakra (Muladhara) - bija mantra LAM
  • Sacral chakra (Svadhishthana) - bija mantra VAM
  • Solar plexus chakra (Manipura) - bija mantra RAM
  • Heart chakra (Anahata) - bija mantra YAM
  • Throat chakra (Vishuddha) - bija mantra HAM
  • Third eye chakra (Ajna) - bija mantra OM
  • Crown chakra (Sahasrara) - bija mantra OM

To reap the benefits of chanting these seed mantras, you need to engage in daily practice for a long period of time.

This will allow the mind to adapt to the training and eliminate any limiting beliefs you have.

Each mantra can be chanted multiple times or you can build and develop your own mantra chanting sequence.

What are the frequencies of the 7 chakras?

Did you know that each of the seven chakras also has a particular sound frequency?

Frequency is normally measured in hertz, and it describes the number of cycles sound waves make in one second.

For example: 528 Hz = 528 cycles per second.

To get a clearer idea of the sound frequency of 528 Hz, simply search for an online sound generator on Google and enter the desired Hz value.

The entire sound spectrum, which is audible to the human ear, extends from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz.

Here are the corresponding radio frequencies of the 7 chakras, from bottom to top:

  • Root chakra (Muladhara): 396 Hz
  • Sacral chakra (Svadhishthana): 417 Hz
  • Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura): 528 Hz
  • Heart chakra (Anahata): 639 Hz
  • Throat chakra (Vishuddha): 741 Hz
  • Third Eye Chakra (Ajna): 852 Hz
  • Crown chakra (Sahasrara): 963 Hz

As you begin to experience some of these frequencies, you may feel a slight sensation in your physical body.

This means that the corresponding chakra responds to the frequency played and is activated by the vibrating sound wave!

Heal yourself with sound

Science is still catching up on how sound therapy helps heal our minds and bodies, but recent advances are very encouraging.

An analysis of hundreds of published scientific papers on the neurochemistry of music indicates that sound therapy has the potential to reduce stress, eliminate anxiety and help patients suffering from dementia or Parkinson's disease.

However, you don't have to wait for scientific proof that mantras and other forms of sound healing will benefit your chakra system.

Albert Einstein once said that “learning is experience and everything else is information.”

I really encourage you to try chanting some of these ancient and seed mantras and experiment with other forms of sound therapy, like:

  • Tibetan singing bowls
  • the tuning forks
  • classical music
  • binaural beats
  • the sounds of nature (rain, water, birds, forest, etc.).

It's your turn :

  • Have you tried any form of chakra sound therapy?
  • Do you use any of these bija mantras in your yoga or meditation practice?
